Established by John and Mason Purcell
in 1973, Purcell Oriental Rug Company, Ltd. has specialized in tribal/nomadic
weaving from Afghanistan for the past 25 years. In addition to our
importation from Afghanistan, we manufacture and wholesale two lines
of carpets produced in the Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan's North
West Frontier Province.
Our Turkoman rugs are not only of
outstanding quality, but also have a feature never before found
in Afghan weaving - they come in American sizes, runners, and are
fully programmed. We are the first carpet producers ever to achieve
size and color consistency in Afghan production. Our Gandhara
Line of archaic Turkman designs, woven today by the same tribes
that wove these designs in the 18th and 19th Centuries, is made
of merino wool, vegetally dyed. We have re-introduced their classic
designs to the tribes who once made them, but had not produced these
designs for more than 100 years.
Our
Khane and Boridan Lines are woven of handspun Ghazni
wool and are also entirely vegetally dyed, reproducing 18th and
19th Century classic Persian and Turkish designs. These carpets
are incredibly heavy, dense and sturdy, designed for the person
who likes some "beef" in a rug.
